Who Is In Your Foxhole?

In one of the darkest times of my life I had a dear friend that fought beside me and for me. During this difficult time, Bryan would often remind me that he was in the foxhole with me. God used him to minister his peace, hope, faith and love.

Bryan went well beyond our notion of the “Good Samaritan” — he humbly put his reputation on the line and stood in my corner. In Luke 10, Jesus tells the parable of the “Good Samaritan”. The easy takeaway is, “be like the good Samaritan”. I think the deeper takeaway, one that is less moralistic and more true to our state is this — we are the man that was stripped, beaten and left half dead on the side of the road. We need someone to rescue us from hopelessness, despair, lost expectations and pain. We need someone to rescue us from the brokenness of this world.

Christ is our Rescuer. When we had nothing to offer except our own desperation — he lifted us from the ditch, healed us and freed us from Adam’s curse.

I can hear echos of Luke 10 in the lyrics of Bob Dylan,

'Twas in another lifetime, one of toil and blood
When blackness was a virtue the road was full of mud
I came in from the wilderness, a creature void of form
Come in, she said
I'll give ya shelter from the storm

At Unbound Grace our goal is to point people to spiritual health… to abide in Christ. Sobriety and healthy relationships are a byproduct of spiritual healthy.

Why Unbound Grace? Because we have been rescued from the Wilderness and we want to be in your foxhole, just like Bryan was for me.
