<image:title>Blog - Behind the mask… remembering who you are.</image:title>
<image:caption>But over time, something subtle happens: The mask stops feeling like something we use… and starts feeling like who we are. We don’t think, This is how I cope. We start thinking, This is me. And that’s the deeper problem, not that we wear masks, but that we forget we’re wearing them. So when God invites us to change, it feels frightening, not because He’s cruel, but because it feels like He’s asking us to let go of “ourselves.” But often, what we’re holding on to isn’t who we truly are—it’s our best attempt to feel safe. This is why real change is so difficult. Not because we lack discipline, insight, or sincerity, but because we keep trying to improve the mask instead of removing it.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Behind the mask… remembering who you are.</image:title>
<image:caption>This matters so much in counseling and recovery. Coping skills can be deeply helpful. Boundaries, emotional regulation, honest community, sober rhythms, healthier routines, these are real gifts. But coping skills make a terrible savior. They can support you, but they cannot secure you. When your foundation is “I can handle life,” eventually, life will prove otherwise. But when your foundation is “I belong to Christ,” your skills become what they were always meant to be: tools for faithful living, not proof of your worth.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Virginia grew up in Birmingham, Alabama, and later moved to Oxford to attend the University of Mississippi, where she earned her Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Psychology. After college, she went on to receive her Master of Arts (MA) in Counseling from New York University. Before joining the team at Unbound Grace, Virginia worked as a high school counselor for five years, serving students and families in both Atlanta and Birmingham. After becoming a licensed counselor, she transitioned into clinical work as a women's therapist focusing on substance abuse recovery.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Is a 12-Step Study For You?</image:title>
<image:caption>At Unbound Grace, connection is a holistic, Christ-centered process of healing and transformation that encompasses the entire person. It begins with honest acknowledgment that you cannot save yourself, but it doesn’t stop there. It’s a lifelong journey of surrender to God’s grace, continual dependence on His strength, and connection to a community of people who follow Jesus and who walk alongside each other in love, accountability, and shared vulnerability. At its core, connection in the Unbound Grace sense is about restoration—being made whole. This transformation happens through the shared grace of an authentic community, where masks come off, burdens are borne together, and no one journeys alone.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Freedom is Messy - Andy’s story mirrors the Christian life and the recovery journey—continually admitting our brokenness and relying on His grace for ongoing healing and transformation. Addiction, like prison, is a place of confinement—a false comfort that ultimately robs us of life and joy. Breaking free requires more than a quick decision; it demands intentional preparation and perseverance—a long steady obedience—rooted in grace.</image:title>

<image:caption>The Gift of Honest Acknowledgment Jesus invites His followers to abide in Him, the true vine, knowing that apart from Him, we can do nothing (John 15:5). Paul echoes this in his call to walk by the Spirit (Galatians 5:16). Recovery doesn’t just foster honesty—it also teaches dependence. Like recovery, the Christian life is not a one-time decision but a continual journey of reliance on God’s grace.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Reflections on Pastoral Counseling - Pastoral counseling exists…</image:title>
<image:caption>to help people tell their stories more honestly, and find hope without the hiding; to admit where we need rescue from the pressure to perform, and allow our real pains, and longings, and disappointments, and failures, to surface where they can be named and known, and met with the compassion and power of Jesus, in whose presence, who you really are is held in the light and loved by the God who tells us truth we are afraid to speak —that we are not, and cannot, and were never going to be enough to save ourselves— and gives himself without limit as our help and our healing, our hope and our future. This—finding ourselves truly known, honestly named, and unshakably loved by the God who came for the sick, for the sinners, for the lost, for the weary, for the hungry, the helpless, the defiled, and the dead— is the true alternative to denial, distraction, and numbing, to cycles of determination and despair, to a serial lineup of heroes that crash under our God-sized hopes.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Thy Will or My Will - Where is peace and hope in times of uncertainty? Does God hear my prayers for my loved one making terrible life decisions? When I faithfully pray for healing and relief, is He ignoring me or waiting for me to do something different? How do I trust God when my prayers go unanswered for years? These are all fair questions that weigh heavy on our hearts. As we seek answers, we are often met with silence, making it difficult to understand God's plan. Our peace and hope are not found in the certainty of our circumstances but in something much greater. Rest in the tension of this truth: In the act of trusting, God embraces us with His complete peace.</image:title>

<image:caption>Praying with Confidence in God's Promises It’s important to remember that there are also things we can pray for with absolute certainty because God has promised them unconditionally. We never have to ask God if it’s His will to love us or to be merciful toward us—He has already guaranteed these in His Word. For example, in Jesus’ model prayer, He didn’t say, “If it’s your will, let your kingdom come.” No, He prayed confidently, “Your kingdom come,” because the establishment of God’s kingdom is an assured promise. So, when we pray for things God has already promised—His love, mercy, forgiveness, and the fulfillment of His ultimate plans—we do so without hesitation. We can rest in these promises, knowing His character is steadfast and unwavering.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Thy Will or My Will - The Power of Surrender Ultimately, "Thy will be done" is more than just a part of prayer—it’s a way of life. It’s about recognizing that God’s sovereignty is not a burden but a source of deep comfort. We can confidently pray, “My soul clings to you; your right hand upholds me” (Psalm 63:8). As we navigate the uncertainties of life, let’s remember that our hope is not in knowing every detail of God’s will, but in trusting the One who holds all things together. Let us pray, "Thy will be done," not with fear or resignation, but with the assurance that God’s will is perfect and that He is faithful to accomplish it fully. In this trust, we find peace. And in this peace, we find hope—hope that God’s will, in all its beauty and mystery, is unfolding for our good and His glory.</image:title>

<image:caption>Ryan, once the vibrant participant in family gatherings, had become increasingly withdrawn, his laughter replaced by a strained smile. His siblings also sensed the change. His sister Emily, who was particularly close to Ryan, found it harder to reach him, while his brother Ethan, still navigating his teenage years, began feeling a growing sense of unease. A Family’s Perspective Ryan’s parents, Brian and Heather Miller, couldn’t shake the feeling that something was off. Ryan’s long work hours were concerning, but it was his behavior outside of work that worried them more. What began as occasional social drinking soon became a nightly routine, a coping mechanism masking deeper issues of stress and anxiety. Emily’s attempts to reach out were dismissed, while Ethan watched helplessly. The togetherness they cherished was unraveling. The parents, torn between respecting Ryan’s independence and fearing for his well-being, found themselves at a crossroads.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - The BOOK is Out! - If you follow Jesus, then you are in “recovery” because recovery is so much more than sobriety; it is a reconnected and renewed life. In recovery, you have left a former way of life, or the “old self,” as Paul the apostle says it, and started a life renewed by God, a “new life” (Ephesians 4:22–24). The “old self” casts a long shadow but will begin to fade as you look to Christ.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Cameras to the Cross - But… Exposure can be painful because it reveals our false hope. The human heart has an underlying drive for control. We yearn to have a grip on every aspect of our lives. We desire a facade of light—a counterfeit that makes everything from our homes to our relationships appear polished and perfected. And so, we often find ourselves putting on a show, creating an illusion where everything is in its proper place.</image:title>
<image:caption>Martin Luther said, “Sin never wants to be sin; it always wants to be righteousness.” That hits home with me. In my bid to control my environment, I’m often tempted to make any excuse to appear better than the truth might reveal or expose. But, by God’s grace, I am slowly learning that to shape a life that looks perfect from the outside is to inadvertently craft a reality that does not recognize the need for God and His redeeming grace.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Cameras to the Cross - Most importantly, walking in the light means relying wholly on Christ. It's a recognition that our strength is insufficient and our wisdom is foolishness. But in Christ, we find completeness. Walking in His light blesses us with a humility that allows us to serve others with love and compassion.</image:title>
<image:caption>Why is this possible? Christ's victory over darkness came through His sacrifice on the cross. It wasn’t a display of grandeur but an emblem of suffering and love. In our struggles with addiction, self-righteousness, or any form of darkness, we're called not to a theology of glory, seeking triumph through human means, but to a theology of the cross—finding redemption in Christ's sacrifice. In the arms of the cross, we are exposed to this profound truth: genuine healing isn't a detour around our deepest pains but a journey through them. In these moments of raw vulnerability, where despair meets hope, we encounter the boundless love and mercy of the One who is the true light.</image:caption>

<image:caption>In the first chapter of John’s Gospel, we witness an incredible moment as John the Baptist recognizes Jesus as the “Lamb of God.” Immediately, two men who were following John began to follow Jesus. One of these men, Andrew, senses the presence of the divine and joyfully identifies Jesus as the long-awaited Messiah. Andrew's heart is so full of love and excitement that he cannot help but share his discovery with his brother, Peter. Instead of a long, drawn-out speech, Andrew tells Peter to “Come and see” the Messiah up close, no binoculars needed.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Earning Love - Confronted with the magnitude of his debt and realizing he had no way to set things right, he decided the only way out was to end his life with his revolver. On his notes, which outlined all he’d taken, all that was missing, he wrote in large letters on the bill, “A great debt! Who can pay?” To work up his courage to go through with the deed, he began to drink more and more, but before he could bolster himself up all the way, he passed out. That same night, Czar Nicholas, dressed as a common soldier, was visiting that fortress for a surprise inspection. Noticing a light on when all should have been dark, he entered the room to find the young man asleep at his desk. He recognized the young man immediately, and a quick survey of the room told him what had transpired – he saw the unbalanced accounting books and the revolver. Then he saw the words written at the bottom of the paper: “A great debt! Who can pay?”</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Repentance, Braveheart & John Cougar Mellencamp - I don’t like actual pain; chances are, you don’t either. Pain comes in many different forms and is not limited to physical things. But pain can lead to life… hear me out. I have a friend whose son has struggled for years. It’s nothing atypical, but on occasions has gone to extremes. He and his wife have loved their son well through the difficulties - not perfectly, but faithfully. They would be quick to point out their mistakes and even some of their sin as they have coped with the immense difficulties the situation has put on the family. Ultimately, they long for their son to know he is loved and that he will only find true peace in Christ. Their journey is full of tears and pain. They want their hurt to turn into something good. John Cougar Mellencamp articulated what so many of us feel in his 1982 song, Hurt So Good: “Hurts so good; Come on baby, make it hurt so good, Sometimes love don't feel like it should. You make it hurt so good.”</image:title>
</image:image>

<image:title>Blog - Repentance, Braveheart & John Cougar Mellencamp - The parents I mentioned earlier took steps that built up to the equivalent of using the “cauterizing iron of discipline” with their son. They were met with resistance, entitlement, a victim mentality, and obstinacy. It was painful for everyone involved. On Monday, the father shared that his son is showing signs of spiritual fruit for the first time in years. Can you imagine the deep-rooted joy that the father feels? After so much pain, heartache, and so many nights of fear and despair, their son is showing signs of true life. In our society of instant gratification consider, please don’t gloss over the fact that this sprig of spiritual life took years to emerge from the ground.</image:title>
<image:caption>Praise God from whom all blessings flow. And for the pain of His cauterizing iron of discipline that leads to abundant life. This is the fruit of repentance: “And he arose and came to his father. But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and felt compassion, and ran and embraced him and kissed him” (Luke 15:20).</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Time Keeps On Slipping, Slipping… - Heidi and I both work full-time, we have two kids under 10, I’m working solo on a landscaping project in the backyard (picture), and we are part of the overcommitted, over-the-mountain Birmingham life. So… we are like you… we don’t have a minute because all of our minutes are spoken for. In the microseconds after I heard the question, “Do I have a minute?” my sarcastic mind went into overdrive, but I held my tongue by God’s grace.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Time Keeps On Slipping, Slipping… - It was one of our Unbound Grace “Guides.” He was meeting with his “Journeyer,” saw me at Panera, and wanted to introduce us. My heart instantly melted, and my bloated self-importance was deflated. The “Guide,” a white guy in his late 60s, was grabbing coffee with his “Journeyer,” an African American in his early 40s that recently progressed from the Foundry’s residential program to the PATH, Unbound Grace’s discipleship program that focuses on recovery in the context of real-life. The two men meet regularly at Panera to talk about recovery, life, the Bible, and whatever else is on their hearts. It’s not complicated or overly programmatic. They listen to each other, empathize with each other, and with the nudging of the “guide,” they look to Jesus as their only true and complete hope.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - We Need You! - Yesterday, the New York Times published a piece on overdose deaths that focused on the recent numbers stated by the National Center for Health Statistics. They are jaw dropping. Roni Caryn Rabin reported, “In the 12-month period that ended in April, more than 100,000 Americans died of overdoses, up almost 30 percent. The figure marks the first time the number of overdose deaths in the United States has exceeded 100,000 a year, more than the toll of car crashes and gun fatalities combined. Overdose deaths have more than doubled since 2015.” We have all been personally affected by this.</image:title>
<image:caption>These are just the number of overdoses that resulted in death. It is estimated that there were just under half million non-fatal drug overdoses over the same period reported above. This provides a tragic view into the incredible number of people who are turning to drug misuse to cope with life.</image:caption>
